Mr and Mrs R.L. Evans 1888, New Port, Rhode Island

This is Mr and Mrs R.L. Evans, a young couple who are sitting for a picture in Chattanooga, Tenn. According to writing on the back, Mr Evans is 21 years old and Mrs Evans is only 18. This photo was badly damaged, so I tried cleaning it up on photoshop, though its still not perfect.

If you know who this couple may be, let us know in the comments!

  1. I suspect that whoever these folks are - might have moved to Texas like so many of my own ancestors from the southern Tennessee-Alabama-Georgia area around 1880s.

I find the dating confusing - was 1888 the photo taken date? why list it twice (for him and her)? Also, Newport RI? the letters are hard to read - there is a Newport TN too - but I can't make out what the letters are.

Hopefully someone helps out with this! :)

  3. Amos Wilson Judd was a civil war veteran who began his photography business in 1877. His name and studio appears in Chattanooga’s business directories from 1890 through 1920. He died in 1929.

Unfortunately, this doesn't help me with the 1888 dating. I think the 1888 means the year of the photo with the age of the couple at that time. If so, R L Evans would have been born in 1867-ish and his wife in 1870-ish and that makes the baby R L Evans that was born and died in 1924-5 and question mark?

Try as I might, I can't find any record (other than this death record) of any R L Evans. I tried the assumption that the 1888 was the father's birth year (give or take 5 years, in case it was her's) and found nothing.

    1. It does seem very likely that's them, but I'm wondering about the ages. It says they were both born in 1863, which doesnt make sense because their ages are very different. Maybe it's just an error?
