"Little Herbert Brandon"

Herbert L. Brandon was born in 1882 to Herbert R. Brandon and Etta Ellison. Though born in New York, Herbert was raised in Ohio with his aunt and uncle, Charles and Anna McKinney. In 1912, Herbert married Gladys C. Dennis. The couple lived in Texas, then moved back to Ohio, where Herbert worked as a manager for the National Supply Co., which sold oil well supplies. He died in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1938.

Mabel Shafer Dornblaser was born in Pennsylvania in 1859 to parents Peter and Elizabeth Dornblaser. Mabel was the youngest of eight children: Catherine, Thomas Franklin, Amanda Jane, Luther, Albert, Puella E. and Pierce M. The Dornblaser's appear to be a family of prominent people, in particular Mabel's brother Thomas, who served in the civil war and wrote several autobiographical works. In January of 1883, Mabel married John Martin Dumm, a physician. They had three children: Clarence, born 1883, Walter J, born 1885, and Mabel, born 1889. Mabel S died later that year, at age 30. Walter later married Elizabeth Lord and they had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth.

Rosetta Falkenhagen 1903, St Louis, Missouri

Rosetta Schmuck was born in 1903 in St Louis, Missouri to Randel and Elizabeth Schmuck. She had one sister, Genevieve, born 1903.The family later moved to Galveston, Texas, where Randel worked as a carpenter. In 1924, Rosetta married Charles A Falkenhagen. They had one son, Charles, born 1925. In 1940, Rosetta and Charles are divorced and she is working as a clerk in the Advertising Department of  the Galveston News-Tribune.

I always enjoy photographs of houses, as they often have a lot of interesting details. The house number is listed above the door- 528. On the porch is a baby carriage, metal tub, and a small rocking chair. Posing in front of the home is the Ellis family.

Delphina Mugler was born in Caddo, Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma, to Francisco and Theodocia Mugler. Both she and her mother are listed as Native American and were members of the Choctaw nation. In 1903 Delphine married Charles Victor Ellis. Their first son, Pushmataha Francisco Ellis, was born in 1904. Daughter Pocahontas Ellis was born in 1907, Hardinia in 1911 and son Henry Charles was born in 1915. I believe the baby is a younger daughter, Delphine, born in 1918.

"Ruth" 1930s-40s

This adorable baby picture was found at an antique store in Galveston, Texas. The name is written in pencil but was erased or smudged, making it difficult to read. The first name starts with a B (Beverly maybe?) and the last or middle name is definitely "Ruth". Anyone else think they could figure it out?

Clarence Del Vecchio was born on June 30 1882 to Kate and John Del Vecchio, an Italian immigrant who worked in insurance. Clarence also came to work in insurance and had 2 wives: Hilda and, later in his life, Daisy. The photographer, Genelli, also took this picture of an unknown woman. I found both pictures in the same antique shop, could they be related?

Anne Peoples and Family, 1870's-1880's

 This tintype was found with the picture of Anne Peoples I posted back in June. I figured they were related in some way and noticed the two women looked very similar to the Anne in the first picture, especially the one on the far right.

Is one of these women Anne? If so, is the man her husband? Who are the children?
Unfortunately, there are no names, so there is no way of knowing for sure. What do you think?

This is the Paul family from Germany, which includes Herman, his wife Elinore, and their five children. They are fashionably dressed, which suggests that they may have been well-off. The little girls in the picture appear to be holding crocheted sacks with some sort of balls in them. I wonder if anyone might know what those are?

Unknown Girl 1860's Louisville, Kentucky

I'm back from a short break! Now that it's near summertime, I should be having more time to post pictures. This is a pretty little girl from Louisville, Kentucky. Henry Metzel was a photographer in Louisville from 1865-1871, and I have a feeling this photograph was taken in the 1860's.

 The littlest one of the family is here again- and now she (he?) is 10 and a half months old. She's being held up by a woman who's been appearing often in these photos. I think she is an aunt or neighbor. There is a baby stroller in the background that is very similar to others I have seen from this time period. They were usually blue or brown.

Here's another picture of Grandma (there are quite a few in the collection). She's holding the baby we saw here with Grandpa on the steps of the Sunday School. The back tells us the baby is 2 months.

Mary Sue Sammans 1940's

 This is a snapshot of little Mary Sue Sammans (Sammons?) It unfortunately doesn't say where it was taken, though she looks to be at some kind of park or forest. In the corner of the picture you can see part of a skirt and a hand ready to catch her in case she falls! I hope Mary Sue finds a good home.

Bonito Cockfield (Pearl's Brother) Nachitoches, Louisiana

Here's a baby picture of Pearl's older brother, Bonito, who was about ten years older than she was. He grew up to marry a lady named Eddie (short for Edwina?) and worked as a plant superintendent.

I found some other photographs taken by J.J. Burke, but little information about the photographer himself. Searching his name on the internet, however, brought up a surprise- a picture of Pearl's brother, Archie. He had apparently served as a wagoner in the first World War and died of disease during this time. I imagine how terrible this must have been for Pearl and her family.

Pearl Cockfield 1890's Natchitoches, Louisiana

For the next few days I'll be posting pictures of Pearl Cockfield and her family. Pearl was born in October of 1897, so this picture is definitely from the 90's. The picture wasn't in very good condition when I got it and someone had tried to tape it up, but the picture itself is very clear. I love the little anchors on the arm chair peeking out from behind the blanket!

Unknown Family 1920's-30's

 This lovely little family caught my eye the other day. This is an Azo Real Photo postcard and the stamp box suggest it's from the twenties or thirties. It looks like the man is wearing some sort of fedora and a single-breasted, striped suit. Both he and his wife are wearing glasses. I love the little boots on the children- a boy and a girl maybe? On the back it reads:

"We are just home from Sunday School and the children are tired and hungry and not very anxious to have their picture snapped."

Sadly, there are no locations or names given.

"Leo" 1900's Terre Haute, Indiana

The back of this photo says this little boy is named "Leo" but no last name is given. The photograph was taken by H.T. Biel of 417 1/2 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana and was found in a photograph album along with other pictures. It was probably taken around the late 1890's or early 1900's.
